Sticco-Ivins Wins 1-Meter Diving; Swimming & Diving Takes 3rd at NEWMACs
Complete 2016 NEWMAC Championship Meet Results
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley College swimming & diving sophomore Maura Sticco-Ivins (Framingham, Mass.) won the 1-Meter Diving title and senior Dorothy Ren (San Jose, Calif.) and first year Karen Wang (Holmdel, N.J.) each earned All-Conference honors on the final day of the 2016 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championships at MIT's Zesiger Center pool.
The Blue finished the weekend with 744.5 points, taking third in the team standings behind NEWMAC Champion MIT (1259.5 points) and runner-up Springfield College (919 points). Coast Guard (608 points) took fourth, followed by Wheaton College (588.5) in fifth, WPI (574.5) in sixth, Smith College (341) in seventh, Clark University (315) in eighth, Mount Holyoke College (296) in ninth and Babson College (165) in tenth.
Sticco-Ivins scored 499.85 in the 1-Meter (11 dives) to win her second NEWMAC Championship of the weekend and the fourth of her career. Now the two-time NEWMAC Champion on both boards, Sticco-Ivins also earned NEWMAC Diver of the Year Honors. Classmate Emily Moore (Milwaukee, Wis.) joined Sticco-Ivins in the final of 1-Meter diving, recording a score of 433.60 to take sixth.
Ren earned her team-high fourth All-Conference nod of the weekend and the eighth of her decorated career in the 200 Back. After advancing to the finals with a time of 2:07.59 in the preliminaries, Wellesley's school record holder in the event clocked in with an NCAA B-Cut time of 2:04.42 to take second in the final. First year Sunny Chiang (Troy, Mich.) also took sixth in the event in 2:09.26.
Wang took home her first All-Conference award in her first NEWMAC Championship weekend with a second place finish in the finals of the 200 Fly. The Blue first year touched the wall in 2:08.24 in the prelims, advancing to the finals where she recorded a time of 2:08.62. In all, Wellesley had three of the top-seven finishers' in the 200 Fly, with first year Jessica Feng (Princeton, N.J.) taking sixth in 2:12.84 and senior Theresa Mitchell (Brownstown Township, Mich.) earning seventh in 2:13.98.
Seniors Ieva Galinyte (Irvine, Calif.) and Charlotte Harris (Cincinnati, Ohio) grabbed the Blue two more top-eight times on the evening. Galinyte took seventh with a time of 53.39 in the 100 Free, while Harris took fifth in the 200 Breast in 2:25.65. Lindsey Wu (Livingston, N.J.) added a ninth place finish in the 200 Breast in 2:29.28.
Harris, Ren and Galinyte then closed out their final NEWMAC Championship appearance by teaming with Chiang in the 400 Free Relay. The Blue took fourth in the event, recording a time of 3:32.07 to close out the team's third place finish. The time helped the Blue end the weekend with another school record.
Wellesley College will host the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Northeast-North Regional Diving Championships next Friday and Saturday, February 26 and 27, at Chandler Pool.
