Blue Swim & Dive Wins Four Events On Opening Day of Sisters Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving is in first place following the first day of competition at the Sisters Swimming & Diving Invitational, hosted by Mount Holyoke College at the Kendall Sports Complex Natatorium.

The two-day invitational opened on Saturday afternoon and continues with sessions during the day and evening on Sunday. The Blue competed in the 200 Freestyle Relay, 50/500 Freestyle, 200 IM, 400 Medley Relay, and 1-Meter Diving on Saturday afternoon. 

Wellesley currently leads the standings with 349.5 points, followed by host Mount Holyoke with 274 points. Smith is currently in third (265.5), with Merrimack in fourth (176), and Western New England in fifth with 74 points. 

Wellesley won four of the six events on Saturday. Taking first place in the 200 Free Relay was the Blue 'A' relay of first year Shawyuan Hsu (Taipei, Taiwan), senior Kayleigh Svensson (Palo Alto, Calif.) and sophomores Julie Mason (Lakeville, Mass.) and Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) with a time of 1:42.23. Hsu went on to claim first in the 200 IM (2:16.46) as well.

Sophomore Paulina Gonzalez (Caracas, Venezuela) took third in the 500 Free with a time of 5:37.93. Junior Hannah May (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished first in the 50 Free (25.27) and helped the Blue 'A' relay of Wegner and seniors Danielle Peterson (Livingston, N.J.) and Maggie Haley (Shady Side, Md.) to a first place finish in the 400 Medley Relay (4:05.85). 

In women's 1-meter diving, first year Lily Duff (Scituate, Mass.) finished in fifth place with a score of 342.60.

The Sisters Invitational continues Sunday, January 19, at 10:00 AM with competition in the 200 Medley Relay, 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, and in the 800 Freestyle Relay. The meet concludes following Sunday evening's final session. The Sunday night session begins at 4:30 PM and includes the: 1650 Free, 200 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke, 200 Butterfly, and 400 Freestyle Relay. 3-Meter Diving will also take place during Sunday evening's session.
