NEWMAC Honors Wellesley's Wegner, NCAA Qualifiers as Athletes of the Week

The NEWMAC honored all individuals who were scheduled to compete at the NCAA Winter Championships as the Athletes of the Week (Frank Poulin).

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College swimming & diving sophomore Jessica Wegner (Taipei, Taiwan) has been named New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Co-Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 22, 2020.

Wegner, the 2019 and 2020 NEWMAC Champion in the 100 Fly, was one of 19 women's swimming & diving student-athletes recognized by the conference on Monday, as the NEWMAC honored all individuals who were scheduled to compete at the NCAA Winter Championships as the Athletes of the Week. The women's swimming qualifiers included Wegner as well as athletes from MIT and Wheaton (Mass.).

Wegner was set to make her first career NCAA appearance and compete in the 100-yard butterfly, 50-yard freestyle, and 100-yard backstroke prior to the event's cancellation. She finished the season ranked 15th in the nation in the 100 Fly and holds the Wellesley program record in the 100 Fly at 55.57, a mark that she set to win gold at the 2020 NEWMAC Championships.


The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference consists of 11 highly selective institutions committed to academic excellence: Babson College, Clark University, U.S Coast Guard Academy, Emerson College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, Springfield College, Wellesley College, Wheaton College, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
