Wellesley Swimming & Diving's Sekhon Sets 200 Breaststroke Program Record on Final Day of MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Kavita Sekhon (Los Angeles, Calif.) set a Wellesley College swimming & diving program record in the 200 Breaststroke event and earned an NCAA "B" cut on the final day of the MIT Invitational at Al '51 & Barrie Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool on Sunday. The Blue finished the MIT Invitational fourth out of seven teams.

Sekhon won the 200 Breaststroke prelim with a program record time of 2:19.30, which surpassed the previous program record that was set by Sekhon at the 2022 MIT Invitational. In the "A" final of the 200 Breaststroke, Sekhon finished second with a time of 2:19.34.

Host MIT won the team competition with a final score of 1844.5. Tufts earned second with a score of 1301.5, RPI took third with a score of 836 and Wellelsey (612), Keene State (272), Simmons (169), and Emory (41) rounded out the team standings.

In 1-Meter Diving, first year Jaya Magavi (West Hartford, Conn.) finished seventh with an 11-dive score of 425.15 while sophomore Elsa Marsden (Vienna, Va.) was 11th with a score of 396.00. Both Magavi and Marsden earned regional qualifying mark with their scores.

In the "A" final of the 200 Medley Relay, Wellesley's "A" team of sophomore Tracey Liu (Princeton, N.J.), Sekhon, sophomore Aubrey Cantrell (Palo Alto, Calif.), and senior Ariana Mitsuoka (Centennial, Colo.) finished fourth with a time of 1:46.04.

Wellesley's "B" team of senior Mira Tang (Mercer Island, Wash.), sophomore Lara Dashti (Kuwait), junior Cecilia Cai (Palo Alto, Calif.) and senior McKaela Glanville (Menlo Park, Calif.) won the "B" final of the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:50.89.

First year Chloe Weingarten (Rochester, Minn.) and junior Julia Lucey (Old Greenwich, Conn.) earned sixth and ninth respectively in the "B" final of the 500 Free with times of 5:32.28 and 5:34.68.

Tang placed ninth in the "A" final of the 200 Back with a time of 2:10.33 while Liu won the "B" final with a winning time of 2:12.01.

Glanville was eighth in the "A" final of the 100 Fly with a time of 58.03 while Cai took seventh in the "B" final with a time of 59.91.

In addition to Sekhon, Dashti also competed in the "A" final of the 200 Breaststroke, placing sixth with a time of 2:25.09. Senior Alice Johnson (Seattle, Wash.) captured first in the "B" final with a time of 2:31.76.

Cantrell and senior Mona Li (Cary, N.C.) were fifth and ninth in the 100 Free "B" final with times of 54.56 and 55.26.

First year Joyce Kim (Houston, Texas) had a time of 2:15.27 to earn sixth in the 200 IM "B" final.

The Blue ended the day with 400 Free Relay. Wellesley's "B" team of Tang, Glanville, Kim, and Cai finished eighth in the "A" final with a time of 3:37.91 while the "A" team of Sekhon, Cantrell, Li, and Mitsuoka were narrowly behind in ninth with a time of 3:40.43. 

Up next, the Blue compete at the Sisters Invitational on January 20-21, 2024, hosted by Mount Holyoke.
